The Origin of Dayak (Based on Tetek Tatum)

Every Dayak believes that their ancestor came from the  sky  brought down to Earth using a golden pot (which was the heavenly transportation) in four separate locations.

The Origin of Dayak (Based on Tetek Tatum)

By  the  will  of  Ranying Hatalla Langit (God), using the golden pot was a man (who actually a god or Sangiang), named Antang Bajela Bulau on the top of Pamatuan hill, somewhere between the river of Kahayan and Barito. And by his power, Antang BAjela Bulau created two men name Lambung and Lanting.

While on top of black granite in upstream of Rakaui river which ends in Malahui river (now part of West Borneo), God created two eggs of hornbill and eagle bird which on their arrival to the ground suddenly transformed into a man and three women. The man named  Litih  or  Tiung  Layang,  who then became Jata (the under water ruler, the god of the under world), while the three  women were named Kamulung Tenek Bulau, Kameluh Putak Bulau, and Lentar Katingei Bulau.

Kameluh Putak Bulau died, and her body was set adrift to the sea until it reached the island of Mako. However, her brother Jata, brought her back to life after giving her the water of life.

God also sent the golden pot into the cave of Mangan, on top of the Keminting hill, and there he was Karangkang, while on top of the Kambang Tanah Siang hill, God created a woman named Sikan.

When Lanting and Karangkang met in their journey, they both decided to go towards Datah Tangkasiang Rakaui Malahui and met the two women who lived there. Lanting got married to Lentar Katingei Bulau, while Karangkang made Kamulung Tenek Bulau to be his wife.

Lambung who was later catching up on Lanting did not get a wife, and so he traveled the river of Rakaui, down to the river of Malahui, until the Kapuas Buhang River. In Kapuas Buhang he met a lovely woman who claimed that she was bawin kangkamiak (a phantom, spirit) and refused to married Lambung. She then suggested Lambung to go to the island of Macau (China) in search of a woman who is destined for him.

Lambung followed the direction and there he met Kameluh Putak Bulau and took her as his wife. They had five children named Sempung (Bungai’s father), Serupoi (Tambun’s father), Nyai Entan, Nyai Rambu, and Kumpang.

After several decades, Lambung felt that he missed his brothers in Borneo, which he had left many years ago. He then took his family to go back with him, apart from Sempung who still had his learning in China.

Lambung went back using his old path, but then he chose to stay in Rangan Marau, a highland with fertile soil in the upstream Joloi River that ends between the rivers of Barito and Kahayan.

It is from the Lambung’s family that the  descendants will  then  be known for their habitation living in between the great rivers of Barito, Kahayan, Kapuas, and Katingan, from which thus called the Uud Danum tribe (Uud means upstream, Danum means water or river).
